Walter Smith

Transcript (full text, 122kb)

In this audio interview, Dr. Walter Smith describes his time in the postgraduate program with Dr. Bowen. Dr. Smith recounts the effort that Dr. Bowen personally made to really grapple with theory, and the demand he made on his students to do the same. This profoundly impacted Dr. Smith, as he realized he would have to figure out theory for himself. His effort to do so led him to not only explore theory within his own family, but to pursue a career working with families who were part of the child welfare system. He saw this environment as offering a particularly fruitful opportunity to explore theory and examine the forces that are at play within family systems. Dr. Smith challenges us to go beyond “just learning Bowen theory,” to exploring different approaches and a different set of questions as we go about addressing large, structural, societal problems. He emphasizes how Bowen theory offers us “an approach to vexing, complex human dilemmas that really tries to underscore that each of us are part of the problem.”

About Dr. Smith

Walter Howard Smith, Jr.’s career focuses on the use of Bowen family systems theory to understand the functioning of families, organizations, and social groups. Since 1987, Dr. Smith has focused on understanding how family functioning from this perspective leads to family violence, particularly child abuse. He attended the post-graduate training program in Bowen theory at the Georgetown University Family Center from 1980-1983. Dr. Smith is a licensed psychologist with a private practice that specializes in treating children, families, and couples. His practice includes executive coaching, business and organization consultation, conferences and lectures on child abuse and family violence from a family systems perspective. For twenty-five years, Dr. Smith was the clinical director and subsequently the executive director of Family Resources, a non-profit organization that provided child abuse prevention and treatment services. Dr. Smith is the retired Deputy Director and Clinical Director at the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, where he led child welfare services for a 1.2 million population county.

Dr. Smith is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Casey Family Programs foundation, based in Seattle Washington, which has a mission to provide, improve – an ultimately prevent the need for – foster care. He is also a board member of the Pittsburgh Foundation, a community foundation that has a mission to improve the quality of life of the Pittsburgh region.
