Anne Curran

Transcript (full text, 148kb)

In this interview, Anne Curran discusses how she became familiar with Bowen theory in the 1970s through Dr. Bowen’s lectures at the Medical College of Virginia. Initially she was quiet in the audience at Dr. Bowen’s talks, but after finally approaching him and asking him for coaching, she began driving to DC monthly for sessions. She discusses how she’s used Bowen theory as a tool to understand better both her family of origin and by extension, her marriages, and her own children. Mrs. Curran notes the challenge for those learning Bowen theory; it is not just obtaining an intellectual understanding of the concepts, but integrating them into one’s thinking and application to life.

About Mrs. Curran

Anne Gordon Curran received her BA in social services and her MSW at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, her family home for several generations. During her second year of graduate training, she was placed at the Medical College of Virginia under the supervision of a social worker in the Out-patient Psychiatry Clinic. It was there in 1972 that she began her journey in learning about Bowen theory from Dr. Bowen during talks he gave to the psychiatry residents every 6 weeks or so. Mrs. Curran continued to learn from him until his death in 1990, commuting to DC from Richmond and later from Charlottesville where she also opened the Charlottesville Family Center to provide clinical services. Over the years, Mrs. Curran stayed engaged in learning about Bowen theory, attending almost all the Clinical Conferences, Annual Symposia, Spring Conferences and other individual one-day conferences. From 2012 to 2021, she invited professional speakers as a volunteer at the Bowen Center for the Professional Lecture Series, initially called the Third Thursday Meetings, and she participated for three years in Navigating Systems Seminars. Mrs. Curran is professionally retired, but she has volunteered since 2013 with The Murray Bowen Archives Project and more recently is working in Williamsburg, VA, with Dr. Joanne Bowen.
